Van Dyke Brown

The Van Dyke Brown process is an alternative photographic printing process that produces a brown print. The Vandyke brown print is based on the first iron-silver process, the argentotype, invented in 1842 by the English astronomer, Sir John Herschel. A photo-sensitive solution is applied to the paper and a negative is then placed on top, a positive image is produced by exposing it to an ultraviolet light source such as sunlight, the paper is then washed, fixed and dried. The Van Dyke Brown process is an archival process. All Van Dyke Brown prints from the Simon O’Callaghan Collection are hand printed by the artist on Arches Platine 310gm 100% cotton paper

Archival permanence

All Images are printed on placement of order to ensure longevity, allow +-14 days for processing. To ensure exceptional archival value photographs are printed on fine art 100% acid free paper. Ultra Chrome/Carbon Pigment inks are used to guarantee durability and permanence of colours.

Validation

The Simon O’Callaghan alternative processes collections are a series of limited Edition Prints, individually numbered and signed by the artist. Artwork is also embossed with the artists’ logo. To validate the investment, each print is accompanied with a certificate of authenticity issued by the printer.

Lifespan

Under normal viewing conditions the prints are estimated to offer a minimum lifespan of 130 years.

Archival framing

In order to protect your investment in Collectable Art Photography it is vital that the print is framed correctly. Prints should never be glued directly onto the backing board.

Correctly framed, the prints are either taped to the reverse side of the mounting board or suspended on archival clips. These clips are hinged onto the backing board of the frame using a minimal amount of archival glue which allows the artwork to be floated between the glass and the backing board, guaranteeing the protection of the print.
Mounting board must be 100 acid free and 2mm clear; non reflective UV inhibiting glass should be used. It is vital that the frame is sealed in order to keep out moisture, dust or insects. Too achieve a clean uncomplicated look it is recommended that white mount board is used within a black or dark brown coffee bean colour frame. The weight of the outer frame is adjusted according to the size of the print. Once framed, the frame should be transported upright and displayed out of direct sunlight.
